Can a barcode show the expiry date?
Usually not. The standard retail barcode (EAN/UPC — the one on almost every packet) identifies the product, not the batch: it carries no expiry date at all. Two scans of the same product from different batches read identically.
Newer GS1 2D barcodes (DataMatrix and QR-style codes, common on medicines and increasingly on food) do embed batch number and expiry date — if the product carries one, our scanner reads it.
For everything else, expiry tracking works the other way around: scan the barcode to identify the product, then record the expiry once at goods-in. That's exactly what ShelfLifePro does — one scan at receiving, and every batch is tracked to its date from then on.
